Pope Francis succumbed to a stroke that left him in a coma and with irreversible cardiocirculatory failure, according to his death certificate published Monday by the Vatican, which also revealed that he suffered from diabetes.
«The death was confirmed by electrocardiogram,» says the document, signed by the director of the Vatican's Department of Health and Hygiene, Professor Andrea Arcangeli.
«I certify that His Holiness Francis (Jorge Mario Bergoglio), born in Buenos Aires (Argentina) on December 17, 1936, a resident of Vatican City, a citizen of the Vatican, died at 7:35 am on 04/21/2025 in his apartment in the Saint Martha residence,» he wrote.
The causes of death were «stroke», «coma» and «irreversible cardiocirculatory failure», he added.
It also mentions the Pope's health problems: «Previous episode of acute respiratory failure in bilateral multimicrobial pneumonia - Multiple bronchiectasis - Hypertension - Type II diabetes.»
